POTRAIT COLLAGE

I was inspired by the iconoclical visual style of the manga “Puella Magi Madoka Magica”, and through research I found out the visual style making team Gekidan Inu Curry and other animations they had made.

The opening song of an animation called Goodbye Mr. Despair caught my attention, it uses elements of collage combined with 2D animation, which features a very abstract way of encapsulating long episodes in minutes.

In 1984, George Orwell portrayed the sad fate of a person to reflect the distortion of the social environment in a very interesting way. I chose the life experience of a classmate who touched me deeply in my life as the story behind the video, based on my feeling of Winston, the main character in 1984.

My friend was born into an elite family with parents who were rarely involved in her life and she grew up very gifted in science studies and was able to get excellent grades effortlessly. Her intellectual achievements were often envied and she became the centre of attention in a place where the only criteria for evaluating people was whether or not they had good grades.

Gradually as she was guided by this value, she became conceited and began to deny the value of hard work, seeing herself as a genius and becoming dismissive of others. As time went on, her talent did not allow her to win easily in everything, and she was not willing to face the difficulties she came across due to her sense of superiority. The reality of failure and the expectation of perfection created a strong mental internal conflict in her mind which dragged her down.
